Backlinks are one of the most important aspects you need to consider when you’re trying to build a higher ranking in the search engines. The search engines can perhaps find and index your site without backlinks, but without backing backlinks the search engines will never suggest your site to any of their visitors. Backlinks are essential for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) because they help to judge the popularity and importance of the website based on their backlinks to other sites. Search engines use a number of standard criteria to rate sites on the web and backlinking is high on the list. Backlinks are links that are directed towards your website. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website.

Backlinks are really just links to your site from another website. These links will direct users to your site whenever they click on it. Backlinks are not as of important as keyword sphere in MSN’s point of perspective. Backlinks are basically incoming links to a particular website or web page. The more the number of backlinks a website or a web page possess, the more popular or important the website is.

Search engines consider one link on your site as one vote for you. Thus, with increased number of links, you get high number of votes and with more number of votes, your site rises in importance. Search engines, particularly Google use the number of incoming links as one measurement of the importance or ranking of the page. Other search engines tend to place less emphasis on the backlinks and more on other factors such as page content. Search engines can recognize quality link when they see one.

Google only updates PR every three months at best and during this time millions of new web pages are born that start off without any PR at all. When assessing your backlinks and you come across a page that appears to have a PR0 that has linked to you remember to check the PR of the home page because the subpage may have been created after the last Page Rank update and consequently won’t show any numbers on the green PR bar. Google also gives new websites a waiting period of three to four months before giving it any kind of Page Rank. This is referred to as the “sandbox effect”. Google search engine gives a lot of weight to backlinks that your site receives and the keywords that are used as anchor text in that link. Thats why Google’s Page Rank exists, to collect the votes (links) for your site and give a score (the Page Rank score).

Links from other sites would need to be something that is relevant to you site. The absolute best type of links are backlinks or one way links to your website. Linking to suspicious places is something else that you must avoid. While it is true that search engines do not punish you if you have backlinks from such places because it is supposed that you have no control over what bad guys link to, if you enter a link exchange program with the so called bad neighbors and you link to them, this can be disastrous to your SEO efforts. Link building (otherwise known as backlinks) are critical to driving guaranteed website traffic to you. Suddenly, you can get great surges in traffic and hopefully in revenue, if you have monetised your site.

SEO and SEM are two of the catch phrases of the web 2.0 new millennium. You will hear the term thrown around a lot, often because its definition is broad or ambiguous and constantly changing. Basically it means, techniques used to boost your search engine “ranking”,  or where your website appear in search engine results. Also using your ranking and other factors to properly market yourself and increase visibility on the web. Studies show that around 80 percent of Google users do not go past the first ten-fifteen results. This has created an extremely aggressive market for obtaining this top position. Many SEO “experts” have often been given a bad reputation by the unethical use of what is called “black hat” techniques (taken from old westerns where bad guys wore black hats). They try and fool search engines through various methods into ranking them higher. This may have worked years ago to some extent, but currently this almost always hurts your ranking, as Google has been programmed to look for these tricks. This should be avoided altogether. The best idea is to stay up-to-date on what the “best practice” is for SEO, and stick to these guidelines. This is often called organic growth, because it is similar to watering a plant. Slowly and surely your work will pay off, but it will not work overnight. Any company that claims to be able to do this instantly is a fraud! Google warns against this, but many people get tempted by the allure of quick results. This never works and these people stole your money. As with everything on the internet and the business world itself, one must use discretion as to how to market and who to work with. The two most important practices of SEO follow.

Quality Written Content

Google as well as most respected SEO agencies agree that QUALITY CONTENT, is the number one way to boost your site. This means lots of relevant, original TEXT as well as rich media. Most importantly, lots of written quality TEXT. Relevant and original text is the most effective for boosting your ranking. Quality content is like food for search engines, they gobble it up when they see it, displaying you in their search results. Links, and Link Building

Another Central SEO theme is the use of linking and Link Building. Generally speaking Google and Yahooconsiders a link from one site to another as a vote from site A to B, though Search Engines do more then tally up all the votes for one specific site, they analyze the quality of the site the inbound link is coming from, its relevancy to the subject and so many more factors kepy top secret in Silicon Valley. Search engine robots often find sites by “crawling” from site to site using links as the web that connects sites together. Inbound links are considered to be the best for your search engine ranking, as they are viewed by search engines as a “vote” from that site for yours. Many factors come into play as to the “importance” of this vote, including whether this link is reciprocated (viewed as link exchange, still very good but not as good), as well as if the site is a good or “bad neighborhood” , if this site is a very low ranking site, spam site or link farm this will not mean much. Another thing to consider when reaching for inbound links is whether or not the linking web page is relevant to your site. If you have a site about computer chips and a gardening site is linking to you, it will not carry as much weight.

Now that we have inbound links covered, link exchange and outbound links are also worth mention. Link exchange can be implemented by sending out emails to other webmasters requesting link exchange, “I’ll link to you if you link to me” type of deal. You will be surprised how often this is successful, boosting both site’s ranking in the process. Another way to encourage this is by setting up a link exchange partnership program on your website where people can come to you with proposals, this can also be automated with the use of JavaScript. Simply having a large database of relevant links, to “important sites” will be good food for search engine spiders, as they view your site as a valuable resource or directory in which people can find good information.. When doing this, a good idea is to not make this page extremely visible or flashy on the site so people don’t go directly to it and leave your site. Another good idea is to have any outbound links on your site open in a new window.

That’s it for now folks, I use many tools in SEO in addition to morals, quality writing skills, and in-depth knowledge. I also use the Fire Fox add-on SEO Quake, Web CEO, and Google Analytics. These are basically the industry standard of SEO tools and most anything outside of that is not only extraneous but dubious. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor’s domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.

Another illicit practice is to place “doorway” pages loaded with keywords on the client’s site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO’s other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.

What are some other things to look out for?

There are a few warning signs that you may be dealing with a rogue SEO. It’s far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the SEO:

owns shadow domains

puts links to their other clients on doorway pages

offers to sell keywords in the address bar

doesn’t distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear in search results

guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would get anyway

operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info

Eliminate CTR penalties using Adwords placement campaigns.  A placement campaign allows you to specify which websites will display your ad.  This gives you an opportunity to improve the quality of content network traffic.

Assuming you are familiar with the proposed Adwords strategy, you’ll recall that the key to getting low cost per clicks with Adwords is relevance. Relevance is determined by two means. First Adwords checks your keyword, ad and landing page to assign a quality score. The guide discussed in detail how to get a good or great initial quality score.

Second, Google reevaluates the relevance and quality score using the Click Through Rate or CTR. Adwords will assume that your landing page is relevant if consumers click on your ads. So, the more consumers that click on your ads, the higher the quality score you receive. On the other hand, if you have many impressions but a low CTR Adwords will penalize you and lower the quality score. The process is very much like Darwin’s natural selection where strong ads are rewarded and weak ads penalized. A half percent CTR is required for maintaining a good quality score. A half percent CTR means one click per every 200 impressions.

There are a few options for an ad that has stopped showing due to a poor CTR.

1) Delete the keyword and ad. Generally this is a good idea because it will keep the poor performing ad from dragging down the entire campaign CTR.

2) Rewrite the sales copy to make it more compelling and increase the CTR. Your ad must still be showing for this to work.

3) Pay a higher cost per click to have the ad appear again.

There is an alternative to the keyword driven campaign that eliminates relevance, the CTR reevaluation and just about any other Adwords penalty you can think of. It’s an Adwords placement campaign where you pay per impression. Adwords does not charge you per click. Instead you pay per impression or CPM, which is the number of times your ad is shown.

An Adwords pay per impression campaign doesn’t need to track relevance, quality score or CTR. Adwords doesn’t care how your ad performs. You will be paying for impressions, not performance. Adwords has shifted the burden of monitoring the performance to you.

You have to track your performance. You don’t want to pay for thousands impressions of an ad that doesn’t generate clicks. You must be sure you have a compelling ad that generates clicks.

In addition, you can choose which websites will display your ad. This allows you to target a specific audience and market. Generally speaking the content network traffic in Adwords is the lowest quality traffic. This is traffic that doesn’t convert well after it has come to your landing page. The content network is Adsense publishers, so you have websites trying to get ad clicks by any means necessary, which results in lower quality traffic than Google Search traffic.

But with the pay per impression campaign, you can specify which websites to advertise on. For example, you can advertise on About,com, which is owned by the New York Times. You can be assured that the Adsense tactics used on About.com will lead to higher quality traffic.

Pay per impression is a viable alternative for getting into a competitive market. If you find that regular Adwords campaign is too competitive, try a placement targeted campaign, either CPM as discussed or a CPC campaign. Again, make sure you have a compelling ad first.
